Conor McGregor congratulates Jose Aldo for win at UFC Calgary

UFC 212 Press Conference

Jose Aldo finally got himself back in the win column at UFC Calgary last weekend when he defeated Jeremy Stephens in the first round of their contest with 4:19 gone.

After previously suffering back-to-back losses against Max Holloway in UFC Featherweight Championship fights, this was a huge win for Aldo, as it has helped him reinsert himself back into the title picture.

The manner in which the Brazilian won as well reminded everyone that he's still one of the best fighters in the featherweight division. Even an old rival was impressed by his win.

Happy for him

Speaking to TMZ Sports on the streets of New York, Conor McGregor spoke about Aldo's win at UFC Calgary and how happy he was for the former UFC Featherweight Champion.

He said: “I’m so happy for him. To see the joy he had after [the win]… It’s a crazy business and I know he’s gone through a lot of stuff, so to see him come back with that great finish, I was very happy for him and his coach Andre Pederneiras.

"The whole of Ireland was happy for Jose Aldo that night.”

McGregor and Aldo fought against each other before at UFC 194 in December 2015 when the Irishman famously knocked out the Brazilian to win the UFC Featherweight title with 13 seconds gone in the first round.

Aldo's win over Stephens at UFC Calgary was his first stoppage win since 2013 when he fought against The Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung. He also earned himself a Performance of the Night bonus as a result of his impressive first round TKO win.

The win definitely gives a chance to compete for the featherweight title once more, but he will likely have to fight against someone like Frankie Edgar and win before getting his chance once more at the title.

That title fight could be either a third fight against Holloway or against the currently undefeated Brian Ortega, depending on how their clash goes as soon as their proposed UFC 226 fight is rearranged.
