UFC Fight Night ended with a scary moment between Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders

UFC 213: Nunes vs Shevchenko

We are now less than two weeks away from the biggest fight of 2018 in the UFC - Conor McGregor versus Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The masses will descend on Las Vegas for what will be a fight for the ages, and one that has been building for years.

But before we can get to that, there was the small matter of a Fight Night card that took place last night in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Always having passionate fans for the sport, Brazil were treated to fourteen fights on the night, and only four went to the judges scorecards.

A former household name that returned to the Octagon for the first time since February was Renan Barao - a man who once went on a seven-fight winning streak in UFC and was Bantamweight champion.

But his career has declined, only winning two of his last six fights since losing the title, and he failed to make weight for his clash with Andre Ewell last night by an astonishing five pounds.

And at a catchweight of 141.75lbs, Barao still couldn't take the decision from the American, being defeated by split decision.

The main event of the night saw a Light Heavyweight contest between Brazilian Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders, who's only career loss came at the hands of Lyoto Machida.

Thiago Santos produced some brutal elbows against Eryk Anders at UFC Fight Night, which forced the American to collapse after Round Three.

That wasn't the original bout - Glover Teixeira and Jimi Manuwa were supposed to square-off, but Teixeira pulled out with an injury in August, and Manuwa followed suit last week.

It meant Anders was only coming off a one-week notice, and on that basis, he definitely wasn't expected to win.

And that ended up being the case. Santos landed some heavy elbows on Anders at the end of Round Three, and seemingly Anders did not look right as the referee came between them with 26 seconds left of the round, as the video below shows.

The final elbows of the round proved too much for Anders, as he collapsed to the mat whilst trying to make it back to his corner, leaving the referee no choice but to award the bout to Santos via way of Technical Knockout.

It was a very scary end to the card, but Anders leaves with an enhanced reputation for taking the fight with less than a weeks notice, and Santos walks out with another win to add to his record.
