Kalidou Koulibaly produced a superb assist for Napoli against Empoli

SSC Napoli v Empoli - Serie A

Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti is a huge fan of Kalidou Koulibaly.

The 59-year-old has spent many years in the game but he considers Koulibaly among the best defenders that he has ever coached.

“Kalidou Koulibaly is one of the best I’ve ever coached, along with the likes of Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Ramos, Thuram and Terry,” Ancelotti said.

“At this moment I think Koulibaly is one of the best in the world.”

High praise indeed.

The Senegal international has been linked with a move away from the Stadio San Paolo for some time, and those rumours have only increased with his performances this season.

It was in the summer, though, that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis claimed they received - and rejected - a €100m offer for the centre-back.

Koulibaly's assist v Empoli

“It's true, we had a €100m bid from the Premier League for Koulibaly, but we're not negotiating his sale," De Laurentiis told Radio Kiss Kiss in July.

Koulibaly showed just why Napoli were unwilling to negotiate his transfer in their match against Empoli on Friday evening.

In the ninth minute, the 27-year-old showed his defensive abilities to intercept the ball.

Not content, he surged forward with the ball and teed up Lorenzo Insigne to give Napoli a 1-0 lead.

There aren’t many centre-backs on the planet who can do that.

Napoli tweeted a video this week of Koulibaly scoring a stunning 25-yard effort with his left foot in training.

He’s clearly got enormous talent. It remains to be seen how long Napoli can keep him at the club.

Fans speculated whether Chelsea were the club who submitted a €100m bid.

Interest from the west London club makes sense considering Maurizio Sarri is now in charge.

Sarri brought Jorginho with him to Chelsea, and you have to believe that he’s monitoring Koulibaly’s performances with a view to reuniting with him soon.
