Rocky Fielding faces the biggest challenge in his career to date tonight against the legendary Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The Liverpudlian has slowly risen through the professional ranks since making his debut back in 2010.
He picked up the Commonwealth title back in 2013 against Mohammed Akrong and fought for various intercontinental belts before suffering a big setback in a knockout defeat to fellow Liverpudlian Callum Smith.
His trainer Jamie Moore spoke to BBC Sport in the build-up to the fight this week.
"Defeat is a huge barrier to overcome," he said.
"We have seen many fighters with massive potential, they lose a first fight and mentally can't come back. They lose an aura.
"I don't think we have scratched the surface, so for the next three years or so we can see an unbelievable fighter.
"It's not every day you get a phone call being offered the biggest fight in boxing.
"As soon as the call came, I fancied it and I knew Rocky would jump at the chance to test himself. As a trainer I was relishing the chance to set a game plan out to beat someone who is pretty much flawless."
Since his defeat to Smith back in 2015, he has built his career back up in an impressive manner, with wins over Christopher Rebrasse, John Ryder and Tyron Zeuge along the way.
The fifth-round stoppage against Zeuge was easily the best performance of his career to date, and he also went into that fight as big underdog.
He only took the fight at five weeks’ notice and went away to Germany to pick up the title with a classy display.
Most pundits have not given Fielding much hope of upsetting the odds tonight.
Spencer Oliver said in the build-up: “If you look at Alverez record, the people that he's beat, it's quite incredible. I believe it's the greatest upset ever, if Fielding pulls off victory.”
However, what Fielding does have is his knockout power, and he also has a big size advantage over Canelo.
It is going to be quite the upset if he does emerge victorious in New York tonight, but after his last performance in Germany, you would be foolish to completely write him off.News Now - Sport News
