Following two defeats in their opening two matches against Manchester City and Chelsea, Unai Emery’s Arsenal went an impressive 22 games unbeaten in all competitions.
That run saw them become genuine top-four contenders, reach the knockout stages of the Europa League and the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
However, the surprise 3-2 loss to Southampton 10 days ago is threatening to derail all of their good work.
Since that defeat at St Mary’s, the Gunners have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by north London rivals Spurs, and produced a dismal performance in their 1-1 draw with Brighton on Boxing Day.
A victory for Emery’s side at Brighton would have seen them leapfrog Chelsea into fourth and move to within four points of Manchester City in third.
However, despite Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang giving them a seven-minute lead, a very disjointed display meant they left the Amex Stadium with just one point.
In fact, the performance was so disjointed it seems the players didn’t even know what formation they were playing.
Emery started the match with what seemed to be a 4-4-2, with Alexandre Lacazette and Aubameyang up-front.
However, Ozil was replaced by Alex Iwobi at half-time as Emery’s side failed to lead at the interval once again.
After the match, Emery explained why he made the switch.
"No, it's only tactical,” he said about Ozil’s substitution. Because we changed from 4-4-2 and this is only a tactical decision."
But Iwobi was confused went he stepped onto the field in the second-half and appeared to ask Granit Xhaka “what formation are we playing?”
IWOBI DIDN'T KNOW THE FORMATION
Take a look:
Now, that’s a worrying sign.
As you’d expect, Arsenal fans were shocked that a player that had just been asked to come didn’t know what system his side were playing.
But maybe it’s not totally Iwobi’s fault.
Emery has often tweaked his formations during matches and it certainly wasn’t the first time he had made a substitution at half-time.
But all this chopping and changing clearly isn’t helping his players…News Now - Sport News
