Alex Iwobi has been one of the most divisive players at Arsenal ever since his debut.

The Nigerian international has been viewed as both a future star of the club to a scapegoat whenever Unai Emery’s side end up on the losing side of a game by the fans.

Against Huddersfield Town, though, Iwobi was the former for the Gunners.

The 22-year-old winger was one of the standout performers in Arsenal’s 2-1 win away to the Premier League basement dwellers, with the Hale End academy product bagging his third goal of the season in the league.

His goal not only ended Arsenal’s dismal winless away record, which saw the North London side claim their first away win in the league since November but saw Iwobi win praise from Gunners legend Ian Wright.

‘A massive asset for Arsenal’

Analysing the game on Match of the Day as a pundit, Wright was quick to praise Iwobi for his performance and issued a message to Arsenal fans to get behind the winger.

Wright said: “What I like about [Alex] Iwobi, somebody that takes a lot of stick from the Arsenal fan base, is he continually tries to get forward and tries to play his game, which is taking players on and getting into the box.

"We are still talking about a very young player who has got a lot of ability and a lot of promise about him, and he is somebody who will get better.

"He needs a lot more encouragement but he is someone that does not hide, he doesn't play safe or get the ball and pass sideways.

"But he is somebody who, for me, with the right encouragement will be a very, very good player and a massive asset for Arsenal.”

The Gunners next fly off to Belarus for the first leg of their Europa League Round of 32 match against BATE Borisov on Thursday night.
