Sam Maxwell defeats taunting opponent with just 10 seconds left in the fight

Maxwell after the fight at Leicester Arena

Sam Maxwell last night proved the old adage, revenge is a dish best served cold, with a savage knockout of his French opponent Sabir Sediri.

The Hackney-born fighter was struggling earlier in the fight and was dropped twice by Sediri in their WBO European Super Lightweight title contest at the Leicester Arena.

Moving into the final round, the Frenchman displayed levels of sheer arrogance, by dropping his hands and goading his opponent with less than 30 seconds to go in the contest, clearly thinking that he had the fight wrapped up.

Which, to be fair, he did have on the judges' scorecards.

However, in a fitting end to the contest, the British fighter, out of nowhere, delivered a brilliant two-punch combination to floor his opponent and end the fight in the most dramatic manner.

Maxwell fell to the floor before being embraced by his team, quite clearly amazed at the stunning end to the fight that he managed to pull off.

The reaction on social media was of astonishment at what they had just seen, and praise for Maxwell for keeping his cool in the situation.

IBF featherweight champ Josh Warrington reacted with amazement: "Like something out of the movies that.... you got to stay switched on! What a KO!"

Scottish boxer Josh Taylor said: "What a stupid stupid laddie !!!! Fully deserved that for the showboating, could have had that fight finished if he had jumped on Sam. Lucky break for Maxwell there, but fair play for staying focused."

Kugan Cassius, co-founder of boxing channel iFL TV, spoke for many with his reaction to the contest – ‘Just seen the Sam Maxwell KO – F*****g hell.’

Maxwell moved his record to 11-0 and picked up his first career title in the process. A lesson to many boxers and sportspeople, that the contest is not over until it’s over and celebrating before you’ve won is never a good idea.
