Angelique Kerber takes swipe at Bianca Andreescu at the net after Miami Open loss

Miami Open 2019 - Day 6

Angelique Kerber, the former World Number 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion, suffered her second successive loss to Canadian newcomer Bianca Andreescu, and afterwards, she was less than impressed with her opponent.

Kerber’s ambitions of returning to the summit of the WTA rankings were ended as Andreescu triumphed 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the third round of the Miami Open – which was the second three set loss to her in the space of a week.

Andreescu clearly got under Kerber’s skin on court and the German let her frustrations be known, brandishing her ‘the biggest drama queen ever.’

"Kerber player a really great match, but I think I took the momentum from the final into this match.

"I expected a lot of good things from her, but I think I was one step ahead today."

Andreescu could have had an even easier day’s work, but squandered a 4-1 lead in the second set to let Kerber back in to the match before eventually seeing the match out in three sets.

"I know I was up 4-1 in the second set, but I tried to leave that past me, and I took my chances in the third," Andreescu added.

"Nothing was really going on in my head, but I was just super tired. I just tried to save as much energy as possible, but I left it all out there today. I felt that she wasn't playing her best tennis, so I kind of just fed off of that."

It appears this won’t be the last that Kerber sees of her opponent in the coming months, as the Andreescu bandwagon rolls on.

The young Canadian will be looking for her 11th successive victory against number 21 seed Anett Kontaveit tomorrow for a place in the quarter-finals.
