Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian appears to take swipe at Maria Sharapova at US Open

Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian caught the eye of spectators after he was caught wearing a D.A.R.E. shirt as the American cruised to victory over Maria Sharapova.

D.A.R.E., which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education programme, was an anti-drugs school programme set up in the United States during the 1980s and '90s.

Fans have suggested that the shirt was a possible reference to Sharapova's doping scandal in 2016, when the Russian was suspended for 15 months after testing positive for meldonium.

Ohanian's shirt may have been the lasted jibe in a bitter feud between Williams and Sharapova.

The two have been involved in a war of words for several years, with the 32-year-old suggesting that Williams was dating her coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

Since being banned from the sport, Sharapova has apologised for her mistake and, as quoted by the Evening Standard, said: "I did not feel it was a huge responsibility of mine to write all those medications down.

"As I said before, in hindsight, this is a mistake of mine... I did not feel it was a responsibility to have to write down every single match drink I was taking, gel, vitamin that I was taking, even if I took it once during the last seven days. I did not think it was of high importance."

She continued, adding: "I know that it’s on the ‘Vital and Essential’ list in Russia, along with ibuprofen. It’s taken as aspirin in Russia. So to me I can’t even [get] my head around that fact."

Whilst many viewers may have missed what Ohanian was wearing, those on Twitter made sure to alert others to the possible slight against the former world number one.

The sheer volume of comments even forced a response from the Reddit co-founder, who tweeted with a gif suggesting that he chose that shirt for a deliberate reason.
