Liverpool knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory after a thrilling 5-5 draw at Anfield.

In a pulsating game that will be remembered for years to come, the home side took an early lead when Shkodran Mustafi put the ball into the back of his own net in the sixth minute. But the Gunners were back on level terms by the 20th minute thanks to a close-range finish from Lucas Torreira.

Martinelli then sunned Anfield with two goals in 10 minutes as Arsenal raced into a surprise 3-1 lead, but James Milner’s penalty on the stroke of half-time ensured the Reds only went into the break one goal down.

A breathless first half was followed by an equally dramatic second 45 minutes.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles made it 4-2 following a brilliant Mesut Ozil assist before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled a goal back for the hosts with an absolute rocket. Divock Origi then made it 4-4 with a brilliant turn and shot, but Joe Willock then made it 5-4 with an absolute beauty from range.

Origi then scored his second of the night in stoppage time to force penalties, which Liverpool won in front of the Kop end. Dani Ceballos missed for the Gunners in the shoot-out, while Curtis Jones stepped up to send the Reds through to the quarters.

The evening started perfectly for the Merseyside outfit thanks to the error-prone Mustafi, whose attempted clearance went horribly wrong.

But three goals in the space of 17 minutes turned this cup tie on its head.

Torreira scored the first, although the goal almost certainly would have been disallowed for offside had VAR been in use.

Martinelli, the 18-year-old Brazilian forward who joined the Gunners in the summer, then enhanced his burgeoning reputation with a quick-fire double…

But his first half - and Arsenal’s - ended on a sour note when he conceded a penalty shortly before half-time for a foul on Harvey Elliot, who became the youngest Liverpool player to ever play in a competitive fixture at Anfield.

Milner stepped up and coolly converted from the spot…

Arsenal restored their two-goal lead in the 54th minute after a calamitous back-pass from Milner was intercepted by Maitland-Niles. Ozil then kept the ball in play - and provided the assist - with a sumptuous flick and Maitland-Niles converted from close range.

Shortly afterwards, Oxlade-Chamberlain scored arguably the goal of the night to make it 4-3.

Absolutely unstoppable…

And the madness continued minutes later when Origi made it 4-4 with a lovely turn and shot past Caoimhín Kelleher.

Willock then matched Oxlade-Chamberlain with his own stunner from outside the box as Arsenal took a 5-4 lead...

Just when it looked like no further goals were going to be scored, Origi then popped up with his second of the night at the death with an acrobatic finish...

And so to penalties, as one of the best cup ties for years was finally decided.

Incredible drama and a night that all those at Anfield - and the millions watching from home - won't forget in a hurry.
