Lionel Messi's son goes viral for his reaction to father's 2019 Ballon d'Or victory

Barcelona's Lionel Messi has won more Ballon d'Or trophies than any player in history.

After his last victory in 2015, Messi was head and shoulders above the rest with five titles, but the Argentine was forced to watch Cristiano Ronaldo reel him in with titles in 2016 and 2017.

However, the 32-year-old has returned to the summit of the podium, defeating Virgil van Dijk and Ronaldo himself to scoop the latest prize at the coveted ceremony in Paris.

In truth, his victory had been on the cards for quite some time.

Although Van Dijk seemed to enter the 2019/20 season as a strong favourite, it became apparent last week that the Liverpool man would be falling short of top spot.

Brilliant evening for Messi

Multiple Spanish reports, including Mundo Deportivo, reported that Messi would be collecting the prize a few days ago - and claims that he had already posed for photos were confirmed in Paris.

As a result, it should come as no surprise that Messi brought his children along to the ceremony as well as his wife and childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo.

They were impatiently waiting in the isles for the moment Messi collected his award and trust us when we say they appreciated the moment when it transpired.

Mateo Messi's viral reaction

That's because Messi's middle child, Mateo, amusingly went viral for his reaction to seeing his father take to the stage and collect the coveted accolade.

While Messi's eldest son, Tiago, sat virtually emotionless in admiration of his father, Mateo simply couldn't keep his emotions together.

The four-year-old was seen smiling and laughing on camera, bouncing up and down, putting his hand on his brother's shoulder and even giving his backrest a head-butt.

It's a reaction that will melt the heart of even the hardest footballing ultra, so check out the adorable moment in all it's glory down below:

It's not surprise that the video has racked up 5,000 retweets and 15,000 'likes' at the time of writing.

Mateo has become something of a viral sensation in recent months, hitting the headlines back in June when Messi revealed that his son teased him about the 4-0 Liverpool result.

“Mateo loves football, he wears all the shirts," Messi told TyC Sport. “We were playing at home and he said to me, ‘I’m Liverpool, who beat you’; ‘Valencia won, eh – I’m Valencia’.

“The TV is there, and he cheers Madrid’s goals to annoy his brother. He’s the one who is a Madrid fan.”

Let's keep our fingers crossed that Mateo chases a career in football, because his personality alone sounds like it would bring entertainment. God only knows how he'd react to winning a Ballon d'Or of his own!
