No club wants to sell their best players. But sometimes, it’s simply unavoidable.
If a player is desperate to leave or if a rival club submits an offer that’s too good to turn down, the selling club has no option but to accept.
Of course, receiving a hefty transfer fee means you can then reinvest that money into your squad.
But who is the ultimate selling club?
No club really wants to be described as a ‘selling club’ but, with using data from Transfermarkt, GIVEMESPORT have worked out the 10 clubs that have received the most income from transfer sales in the last 10 years.
- Every Premier League club's worst social media moment
- The most expensive transfer featuring a player at every age from 13 to 40
- Twitter thread reveals 10 players with relatively low release clauses
Dating back to the 2009/10 season, which clubs have been the most from player sales? Let’s take a look:
10 | Liverpool | £691.47m
It’s fair to say Liverpool have invested their money wisely. Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez left for Barcelona in big-money moves, while they also recouped £50 million for Fernando Torres.
But the Reds have also mastered the art of getting decent money for rubbish players - Mamadou Sakho, Christian Benteke, Jordan Ibe, Dominic Solanke etc.
9 | Porto | £717.03m
Porto seem to sell one of the best players every single year. This season, it was Eder Militao to Real Madrid for £45 million. Previously, it’s been the likes of Radamel Falcao, Jackson Martinez and Lisandro Lopez.
8 | Real Madrid | £731.21m
One of the biggest spenders in the past decade but also one of the biggest selling clubs.
Of course, the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus helped.
7 | Roma | £745.34m
Liverpool have certainly contributed to this after spending more than £100 million on Mohamed Salah and Alisson.
The Giallorossi also had something of a firesale last summer with Kostas Manolas, Stephan El Shaarawy and Luca Pellegrini all leaving.
6 | Barcelona | £748.89
Neymar accounts for £200 million of this.
Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez have contributed a further £60 million, while the Camp Nou club have also offloaded the likes of Jasper Cillessen, Yerry Mina, Paulinho and Malcom for relatively hefty fees.
5 | Juventus | £806.72m
Juventus sold Paul Pogba for a world-record fee of £89 million back in 2012, while they’ve also picked up decent fees for Joao Cancelo, Leonardo Bonucci and Arturo Vidal.
4 | Chelsea | £820.24m
Chelsea have lost some key players in recent years with Eden Hazard and Diego Costa leaving in big deals.
The likes of Oscar, Alvaro Morata, David Luiz, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku, Thibaut Courtois and Arjen Robben have also all left for fees in excess of £30m.
3 | Atletico Madrid | £878.4m
Atleti’s ability to create world-class strikers has led to them receiving almost £900 million in transfers fees in the last 10 years.
Antoine Griezmann, Radamel Falcao, Jackson Martinez, Sergio Aguero, Diego Costa and Fernando Torres have all left the club in sizeable deals.
2 | Monaco | £894.1m
Of course, Kylian Mbappe’s £165 million move to Paris Saint-Germain has a big impact but the French side have moved on James Rodriquez, Thomas Lemar and Anthony Martial for more than £50 million each.
1 | Benfica | £909.9m
Benfica are the ultimate selling club having received more than £900 million in the last 10 years. Wow.
So, who have they sold to reach that?
Joao Felix to Atleti for £113 million is by far the biggest fee they’ve received. But then there’s Ederson (£36m), Axel Witsel (£36m), Raul Jimenez (£34m), Nelson Semedo (£32m), Victor Lindelof (31.5m) and Renato Sanches (£31.5m).
That’s not even mentioning the likes of Angel di Maria, Nemanja Matic and David Luiz.
Benfica are the kings of selling players.
So, who could feature in this list in the future?
PSG certainly will if they sell one of Mbappe or Neymar in the coming years in what will surely be a world-record fee.
Liverpool could also find themselves higher up the list if they fail to keep hold of any of their star men such as Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Sadio Mane or Salah.
But we all want to know which star Benfica will sell next. Ruben Dias? Alejandro Grimaldo? Rafa Silva?News Now - Sport News
