Liverpool are reportedly in the hunt to sign Timo Werner this summer.

There aren't many ways to improve on Jurgen Klopp's table-topping Reds, but Werner is certainly one of the exceptions after making a thrilling start to the season with RB Leipzig.

And the German striker gave English football a taste of what he can offer by scoring the winner against Tottenham Hotspur in their Champions League round of 16 first leg.

Leipzig had the better of the chances in north London, forcing Hugo Lloris into some brilliant saves, and bagged an all-important away goal when Werner converted from the penalty spot.

Burying that spot kick into the bottom corner elevated Werner to a sensational 26 goals in 31 games across all competitions as well as nine assists to boot.

Werner quizzed after Spurs win

So, it's no wonder that Liverpool are supposedly sniffing around for his signature and it's similarly inevitable that he was quizzed about a potential move after the Spurs win.

And Jan Age Fjortoft was on hand to ask the question on everybody's lips, although he might not have expected Werner to give him such an honest answer.

While big name footballers are usually pretty dismissive when linked with transfers, Werner was actually incredibly positive and could be interpreted as flirting with the Reds.

Werner flirts with Liverpool

Werner said to Viasport: "Yes I know that Liverpool is the best team in this moment in the world.

"And when you are linked with that team it makes me very proud.

"But in case of that, yeah, it's a pleasure but I know that in Liverpool there are a lot of good players.

"And I have to improve myself, then to learn much more things to get on this level to play there."

You can almost here the nervous giggling of Kopites from here...

To be fair, there were enough careful hints in the interview to justify Liverpool fans joking that Werner's move is 'confirmed' and you just know a 'Welcome' YouTube compilation will follow.

Werner to Liverpool this summer?

But there's no guarantee that a move to Anfield will transpire and Klopp will have to decide whether Werner could fit into the system, because he's too good to be twiddling his thumbs on the bench.

If Liverpool give a transfer the green light, though, you just know that Werner will shake hands on a deal and join up with the team that he believes is the best in the world.

And if Werner could transfer his goal-scoring form from Germany to England in tandem, then the world champions will become even stronger than before. Talk about a scary thought.
