Rivaldo admits he can't understand why Barcelona have signed Martin Braithwaite

Barcelona fans got their first glimpse of new signing Martin Braithwaite during his unveiling at the Camp Nou - but it didn’t look good.

Stepping out into an empty stadium, the striker attempted to perform some skills but failed miserably.

Braithwaite’s controversial move from Leganes has baffled plenty of fans and journalists and former Barcelona forward Rivaldo can’t make sense of it either.

The 28-year-old has arrived on an emergency deal following injuries to Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez but he doesn’t figure to play an important role for the Blaugrana.

He can’t play in the Champions League, Barcelona are out of the Copa del Rey and won’t start every La Liga game for them.

And Rivaldo wishes that Barcelona had explored the options in their academy instead of moving for Braithwaite.

"Honestly, I neither understand nor agree with [Braithwaite's] signing for several reasons," he told Betfair, per Marca.

"Firstly, because this signing was made outside the window and, in addition, because Barcelona could have chosen a kid from La Masia instead of [making] this transfer.

"I see no reason to make such an effort to incorporate a forward who, with all due respect, I doubt is the player that Barcelona need now.

I was thinking of a younger player who could improve more.

So, why have Barcelona really signed Braithwaite?

Spanish-based sports writer Andy West explored the move in an interesting thread on Twitter.

West believes the biggest benefit for Barcelona will be the ability to rest Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Ansu Fati more easily.

“Saturday vs Eibar, for example, *should* be a perfect time for Braithwaite to show his value,” West wrote.

“If he can start, contribute enough to help Barça win the game while giving Ansu a game off ahead of Napoli away and Clasico, buying him will become worthwhile.”

That’s an optimistic outlook. There's a real danger that Braithwaite will go down as a dismal signing, though.
