Bruno Fernandes has more goals and assists than Mesut Ozil in 2019-20 Premier League

Bruno Fernandes & Mesut Ozil

Bruno Fernandes is enjoying a fine start to his Manchester United career following a January move from Sporting Lisbon for an initial £47 million fee.

The Portuguese international was forced to play in a holding role during his Man Utd debut against Wolves but, since taking over in the number ten position, he's been brilliant.

Fernandes has registered three goals and four assists in nine matches across all competitions and he's yet to lose a game for United, who are unbeaten in their last 11 outings.

The midfielder is looking to establish himself as one of English football's chief playmakers, which will inevitably see him compared to the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Mesut Ozil.

With that in mind, we've taken a look at a number of Fernandes' 2019-20 Premier League statistics compared to Arsenal's Ozil - and the results are pretty impressive.

Ozil desperately struggled for game time under Unai Emery but ever since Mikel Arteta took over as Arsenal manager, the German has been a regular in the Gunners starting XI.

Meanwhile, Fernandes has instantly become a big part of Man Utd's team and the energy he provides as well as quality in the final third have already made him a huge fan favourite.

Bruno v Mesut: What do the stats say?

The Premier League's official player comparison tool shows that Fernandes has recorded more goals and assists than Ozil in 13 less appearances.

The Manchester United man has two goals and three assists to his name in five league games, compared to one goal and two assists in 18 matches for World Cup winner Ozil.

Despite only joining Man Utd in January, Fernandes has taken 19 shots, ten more than Ozil, and his tally of seven shots on target is four higher than that of Arsenal's 31-year-old.

The creative midfield pair have set up the same number of big chances and Ozil boasts a superior pass completion rate - 88.28% compared to 76.47% for Fernandes.

However, Bruno has played one more through ball than Ozil and, defensively, the 25-year-old has produced more clearances (nine), headed clearances (four) and won more aerial duels.

The fact that a comparison can even be done between players who have a 13-match difference in their respective number of appearances shows how good Fernandes has been.

It also shows Ozil's inconsistency and lack of output in the final third so far this season, despite his effortless class being clear for all to see almost every time he steps onto the pitch.

With the Premier League suspended until next month due to the spread of coronavirus, Ozil and Arsenal sit ninth in the table, while Fernandes' United are three points behind Chelsea in fourth.
