Liverpool unleash £54m bid for defender

Van Dijk

Following Manchester City's 5-0 win over Burnley on Monday, it meant that Liverpool couldn't wrap up the title this week.

It is surely only a matter of time though before Jurgen Klopp's side do indeed win the title for the first time in 30 years.

The crown is truly within sight, and no one can say they don't deserve it. The Reds have been streets ahead of anyone in the Premier League this term, tearing teams apart at will.

Though, their first game back against Everton ended in a 0-0 draw. For once, Liverpool's bustling attack were stopped.

The best defence in the league, however, rather unsurprisingly kept a clean sheet.

It's a scary thought that Liverpool's defence could get even better, but that's one area they're seemingly aiming to improve ahead of next term.

Virgil Van Dijk hasn't yet found his ideal partner in defence but they could be on the verge of signing someone who could complement him perfectly.

Koulibaly

That comes in the form of Kalidou Kouliably, a player the Reds have now reportedly made an offer for.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via the Express), Liverpool have launched a £54m bid to sign the Napoli defender.

However, it looks as though the bid has been turned down with £90m the required asking price.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

At times, it feels like Klopp has struggled to find a partner for Van Dijk.

Although their defensive record this term - conceding a league-low 21 times - says otherwise, they could still improve.

Dejan Lovren is hardly a pillar of solidity while Joe Gomez has endured a rocky season with injury. Joel Matip, meanwhile, has just nine league appearances to his name.

Thus, the addition of a colossus such as Koulibaly would help the Reds no end.

He is one of the most impressive defenders in Europe, not only boasting the ability to play the ball out from the back - successfully finding a teammate with 89.3% of his passes - but also proving strong in the tackle.

The 29-year-old has won a considerable 2.6 challenges per game in Serie A this term, also winning 2.3 aerial duels.

You'll struggle to find an area of Koulibaly's game where he struggles, such is his might in defensive situations. The thought of partnering the Senegal international next to Van Dijk really is scary.

£90m would be a hefty fee to pay but it's only £15m shy of what they paid for their current Dutch defender. Klopp knows too well the influence that had on the team.
