Leeds United are making plans for the summer.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are currently second in the Championship and could well be on the verge of promotion to the Premier League.

They are level on points with leaders West Bromwich Albion and seven points clear of third-placed Fulham.

It remains to be seen if they will be playing in the top-flight or the second-tier next term but plans seem to be afoot to strengthen the squad.

According to SportDay, via Sport Witness, they are eyeing up AEK Athens goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas.

The 26-year-old is a player who has previously been linked with Scottish giants Celtic, and Leeds have now entered the race.

Barkas is a Greece international, winning 10 caps for his country, and has long been first-choice for AEK, making a total of 106 appearances.

In that time, he has kept a total of 58 clean sheets, and it appears that Bielsa’s men could acquire his signature in the coming transfer window.

Both Basel and Montpellier are also said to be interested, though Barkas would like to move to England.

Kiko Casilla is Leeds’ current first-choice goalkeeper and he has kept 15 clean sheets across 35 Championship appearances thus far this term.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Squad depth is vital.

That is particularly true if Leeds are to be playing Premier League football next season.

It is an old adage in the top-flight that the best clubs need two top players in each position and Leeds bringing in Barkas would be a step in that direction.

Per Transfermarkt, he is valued at just £2.1 million and a fee at such a price for a 26-year-old international goalkeeper would be something of a bargain.

Of course, there is no guarantee that he would be able to adapt instantly yo life in England but it is a sensible, low-risk transfer, particularly with Casilla also under the club’s employ.

Leeds should do all they can to make this transfer happen.
