It's set to be an exciting summer for Newcastle United supporters.

While the Premier League are yet to make a decision on the proposed takeover of the club from Amanda Staveley and the Saudi-backed consortium for a sum of £300m, that won't stop them making preparations for the transfer market.

Regardless of who will be running the club, the first team squad needs strengthening and that has to be a priority.

Many names have already been linked with a move, but one could certainly gets fans very excited.

The Athletic have claimed that Callum Wilson is a player who the club have been looking at.

The Bournemouth striker has attracted plenty of attention during his time on the South Coast since arriving in 2014.

The Cherries are struggling in the Premier League this term and face a battle to avoid the drop this time around.

If Bournemouth were to go down, Wilson is a player who would have no shortage of interest in his services with Chelsea and Manchester United both previously keen.

Valued at £21.6million by Transfermarkt, Wilson has scored eight goals so far this term but missed Bournemouth's 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday night through suspension.

Chris Waugh of The Athletic was covering the fixture at the Vitality Stadium when he was asked by a Newcastle supporter about the prospect of signing Wilson this summer.

Waugh replied: "Wilson is certainly someone Newcastle have watched previously."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

While there's nothing to suggest that Newcastle United would be keen on Callum Wilson this summer, it will certainly spark conversation.

Steve Bruce's side will almost certainly be in the market for a striker this summer as they look to bolster their squad.

Given the fact that it's claimed that there's been previous interest, it is one that they may revisit given the circumstances.

If Bournemouth are relegated, Callum Wilson will almost certainly move on this summer with several top flight clubs likely to be keen.

Whether Newcastle will see him as a priority remains to be seen, but he's certainly a player who plenty of fans would love to see at St James' Park.
