Despite winning the Champions League last season, Liverpool failed to strengthen in the summer transfer window. To be fair, they were almost perfect in the Premier League too but missed out on glory despite picking up 97 points.

Jurgen Klopp did move to sign Takumi Minamino for £7.25 million in January.

But having won the Premier League this time around, surely Liverpool will look to improve their squad ahead of the defence of their title.

However, Liverpool fans will be fearing the worst after the club backed out of signing long-time transfer target Timo Werner last month, allowing Chelsea to steal in and trigger the German’s release clause.

Are Liverpool set to have another quiet summer transfer window?

As they sit 20 points clear having already claimed the Premier League title this time around, you could argue Liverpool don’t need to sign anyone. Just keeping Klopp and their star players together should be the club’s main priority.

But following their 4-0 hammering against Manchester City on Thursday, perhaps there will be a rethink.

City thrashed the Reds at the Etihad as they showed everyone that they’re not actually too far behind the champions despite the league table saying the gap is 20 points.

And just hours after the final whistle went in Manchester, Liverpool were being linked to a HUGE signing. In fact, Spanish outlet Sport were saying it was ‘very close’ to being done.

We’re talking about Bayern’s Thiago.

Sport claim that “negotiations are very advanced” between the former Barcelona midfielder and Liverpool with only the fee now needing to be worked out.

The Spaniard is 29 and, after seven seasons in Bavaria, is looking for a new challenge. After splashing the cash to sign Leroy Sane, Bayern are looking for €35 million - a fee that Liverpool can surely afford.

However, the report adds that the Reds are reluctant to pay that in one go for a 29-year-old and will look to pay in instalments.

It seems Liverpool are already looking at ways to improve their incredible side and Thiago would do just that.
