Arsenal attacker could sign new contract

Arsenal have never really had the rub of the green when it's come to contract sagas.

All too often they've let players wind down their terms until the final year. We saw that with stars like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, but fortunately, the latter stayed.

Though, the Gunners haven't learned and are stuck in a familiar situation.

Bukayo Saka had just one season left on his contract before agreeing new terms earlier this week while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is now in the same boat.

The club captain could leave this summer if he cannot put pen to paper on a renewed contract at the Emirates.

There was also a similar scenario that played out with David Luiz. Before penning a one-year extension last week, his contract was going to end this summer.

Arsenal don't half like leaving things until the very last minute.

It will be incredibly interesting to see what happens with Aubameyang, a man linked with the likes of Barcelona.

However, efforts are being made by Raul Sanllehi and Edu to tie down one of their most promising young stars.

The Times claimed this week that Arsenal are set to offer a new deal to Brazilian wonderkid Gabriel Martinelli.

The 19-year-old has been of few shining lights this season and just a year after arriving from Brazil, is set to earn a reward.

Martinelli is currently only on £10k-a-week at the Gunners.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Signed for just £6.3m last summer, Martinelli has been nothing short of sensational since walking through the door.

In his first campaign in English football, the teenager has racked up ten goals in all competitions, coming up with vitally important strikes against Chelsea and West Ham in the Premier League.

His threat was all too clear from the moment he arrived, rampaging past the Real Madrid backline with breathtaking pace during Arsenal's tour of America in 2019 pre-season.

It was a similar move to the one he replicated when he found the back of the net at Stamford Bridge, darting past N'Golo Kante and finding the back of the net.

Given his performances, a new deal would be richly deserved. Although, more importantly, it could signal a change in Arsenal's contract policy.

Get things done as quickly as possible, rather than waiting until the last possible moment.

Martinelli will, unfortunately, play no further part in the current season because of injury, but once he returns, he could well be back on improved salary.

That can only be a good thing.
