Newcastle United target Argentine wonderkid

It's set to be an exciting summer for Newcastle United supporters.

While the Premier League are yet to make a decision on the proposed takeover of the club from Amanda Staveley and the Saudi-backed consortium for a sum of £300m, that won't stop them making preparations for the transfer market.

Victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday night has all-but secured survival in the Premier League, meaning that plans can be made for next season.

Regardless of who will be running the club, the first team squad needs strengthening and that has to be a priority.

Several positions are being pinpointed as areas to improve and that bodes well for a big summer of transfer business.

Many names have already been linked with a move, but one could certainly gets fans very excited.

According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle United are interested in Alan Velasco.

The Independiente starlet is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in South America at present.

That has led to plenty of interest in the 17-year-old, with Lyon and Monaco both said to be plotting a move.

Velasco has made 10 first team appearances for Independiente after bursting onto the scene with the Argentina under-17s last summer where he earned rave reviews.

Under contract until 2022, the playmaker has a release clause of around £17million which would be enough to force the Argentine side into a sale.

A move to Europe seems like the next step for the midfielder, however a move is likely to depend on his chances of securing regular first team football.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

What a coup this could be for Newcastle United.

Alan Velasco has proven himself as one of the hottest prospects in the world after bursting onto the scene with Independiente.

That means that it's no surprise that he's attracting interest from so many clubs.

With such a low release clause it means that someone is going to tie up a real bargain for a player who appears to have the world at his feet.

Velasco is very much in the upward curve of his career and that means that any club who secure his signature will be hoping to see real signs of progress over the coming years.

With Newcastle United hoping to complete a takeover in the coming weeks, this could be a sign of things to come.

If the Magpies can start competing for the worlds' best young talent then it's only a matter of time before they start competing with the elite clubs in the Premier League.

That process could take several years, but supporters will just be pleased by such a show of ambition.
