Could Philippe Coutinho be returning to the Premier League after his dream move to Barcelona has turned into a nightmare?
For five years, the Brazilian was magnificent for Liverpool. He scored 54 goals in 201 appearances in all competitions and fully deserved his move to Barcelona - although Kopites weren’t too impressed by how he went about it.
It was the chance to take his career to the next level and establish himself as one of the best players in world football.
But it didn’t go to plan.
Coutinho failed to replicate the form he had shown at Anfield and Barcelona fans were probably wondering why the cub had spent £142m on him.
He spent this season just gone at Bayern Munich but didn’t impress enough to earn a permanent move.
Now, his career is at a crossroads with his future at the Camp Nou in severe doubt.
And it’s the latter who are best-placed to sign him.
In fact, the Gunners appear to have been offered a rather incredible deal to purchase him on a permanent deal for just £9 million.
It involves the unwanted Matteo Guendouzi going in the opposite direction. According to the report, Mikel Arteta wants the French midfielder “out of his squad regardless".
A win-win deal then?
If a deal for the on-loan Dani Ceballos can’t be agreed then Coutinho would be a very astute signing indeed.
However, it’s believed Juventus are also interested in Guendouzi and there’s the possibility of a swap deal involved there too.
Guendouzi for Cristiano Ronaldo anyone…?
GIVEMESPORT’s Rob Hoskin says:
Paying £9 million for a player that cost £142 million just a few years ago seems like ridiculous business. He may not be the player he was at Liverpool but there is no doubting Coutinho’s talents.
Considering he’s only just turned 28, he’s still got plenty of years left in him.
As for Guendouzi, it’s clear he’s not part of Arteta’s plans. There’s definitely a decent player in there but the 21-year-old lacks maturity at the moment.
Get it done, Mikel!
