Newcastle United tipped to sign Callum Wilson following Bournemouth relegation

Newcastle United supporters are crying out for some good news.

Last week saw Amanda Staveley's Saudi-backed consortium pull the plug on their £300million takeover of the club - a decision which has left fans feeling bereft of hope and ambition moving forward.

While talk are still going on with regards to another potential buyer for the club, many are wanting the focus to be on planning for next season.

Newcastle didn't exactly set the world alight in the Premier League last term, and the hope is that this time around they can add a little bit more spark to Steve Bruce's side.

One key area to improve will be in attack.

The Magpies were the fourth lowest scorers in the top flight last term, and for a fanbase who are historically big fans of free-flowing, attacking football, it's just not good enough.

Funds may be somewhat limited this summer, but signing a goalscorer has to be a priority and that's led them to the door of the Vitality Stadium as they assess a move for Callum Wilson.

Valued at £18million by Transfermarkt, the Bournemouth striker is likely to be available this summer with the likes of West Ham and Tottenham both keen.

However according to former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips, the 28-year-old should look to avoid a move to Spurs in favour of the Magpies or the Irons.

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips said: “If Harry Kane moved on, I would go to Tottenham but assuming Kane stays he will be the second striker.

“I know what it is like to play football up in the North East, Sunderland fans will not thank me for this but I would go to Newcastle if I was Wilson.

“If he was to go to Newcastle or West Ham he is going to play because Haller and Joelinton have not exactly lit it up.

"Callum Wilson would have a fantastic chance of playing week in, week out and I would want that if I was moving.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would be a great move for Newcastle United.

The Magpies need a striker who knows where the back of the net is, and Callum Wilson has certainly proved that he's the man to tick that box.

As well as his finishing ability, the Bournemouth man possesses great pace and work rate - something that will immediately endear him to the supporters at St James' Park.

With the Cherries being relegated it's likely that they'll be open to offers for the striker, and while it remains to be seen what that fee could be, it's one that I'm sure the Tynesiders will be able to meet.

This would be an excellent deal for both parties and one that could come to fruition.
