Rangers could lose key man this summer

Rangers got their season off to a winning start over the weekend.

Steven Gerrard’s side beat Aberdeen on Saturday, recording a 1-0 victory at Pittodrie Stadium.

A solitary Ryan Kent goal was enough for the Gers, ensuring that they have kept pace with last season’s champions Celtic.

Neil Lennon’s side won 5-1 against Hamilton to move to the top of the table and the pace, thus, has been set.

Celtic, of course, lost just twice last season before the curtailment of the campaign, picking up 80 points from 30 games.

Rangers ended the season 13 points behind them, despite losing just four games all season.

They need to ensure that they are almost perfect, then, if they are to stop Celtic from recording their 10th successive Scottish Premiership victory.

However, they may well lose one of their key players.

Alfredo Morelos, after all, is being tracked by Ligue 1 club Lille, and they have already made their first bid for the striker, who scored 29 goals in all competitions last season.

They are said to have tabled an offer worth €15 million (£13.5m) plus an additional €2m (£1.8m) in bonuses, per Footmercato via Sport Witness.

Rangers have rejected that offer and would rather receive €20m (£18m) for the Colombian.

Of course, the Scottish club have already signed two strikers in this transfer window, bringing in Kemar Roofe from Anderlecht and Cedric Itten from Swiss club St Gallen.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

This would be a bitter blow for Rangers.

The report states that the deal is already at a fairly advanced stage, with Morelos agreeing personal terms with the French club ahead of his move.

He is said to be aware of the fact that Nicolas Pepe and Victor Osimhen have become major stars thanks to their time with the French club and that appeals to him.

However, he is a key member of Gerrard’s squad and it would be a tall order to replace him.

Only Jermain Defoe matched Morelos in reaching double figures last season and one cannot rely on the former Tottenham Hotspur forward to keep producing at the age of 37.

They should pull out all the stops to convince Morelos to stay.
