Jadon Sancho to Man Utd: Seven alternative wingers United should look to sign

After months and month of rumours, it seems Jadon Sancho WON’T be going to Manchester United after all.

Borussia Dortmund set United a deadline of August 10 to get the deal done and cough up the €110 million the German club were demanding.

August 10 stemmed from the fact Dortmund were travelling to Switzerland on that date as they prepare for the 2020/21 season. They don’t want a long drawn-out transfer saga that impacted their preparations for the new campaign.

United have failed to pay up and Dortmund sporting director, Michael Zorc, appeared to suggest that the deal is now dead.

“We plan with Jadon Sancho,” Zorc said. “He’ll play for us next season.

“The decision is final. It think that answers all of the questions. Last summer, we adjusted Jadon’s salary to match the development of his performances. So in context, we had already extended his contract until 2023 back then.”

So, it looks unlikely that Sancho will be arriving at Old Trafford this summer.

It begs the question: Who should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sign instead?

Well, we’ve decided to look at seven possible alternatives to Sancho if, indeed, the deal is dead in the water.

Federico Bernardeschi

United have been linked with Juventus’ Bernardeschi previously and he was reportedly included in a potential swap deal with Paul Pogba recently. However, the 26-year-old only managed one goal in 29 Serie A matches this season and has nowhere near the quality Sancho possesses. He’d only cost around £30 million, though.

Rabbi Matondo

Welshman Matondo actually played for Manchester City’s youth sides before signing for Schalke in January 2019 for a reported £11 million. Still only 19, Matondo has a £53.7m release clause but would probably cost less than that. He’s only made 13 career first-team league starts, though, and would need time to progress.

Wilfried Zaha

Zaha could only make four appearances for Manchester United following his move from Crystal Palace in 2013. But the 27-year-old now looks set to leave Crystal Palace and a return to Old Trafford might not be out of the question.

David Brooks

Brooks had a magnificent 2018/19 season for Bournemouth but only managed nine appearances this season after suffering a serious ankle injury. He was valued at £50m in April but after Eddie Howe’s side was relegated, you’d think that figure has since dropped dramatically.

Federico Chiesa

The 22-year-old has played more than 130 times in Serie A for Fiorentina and caught the eye during the 2019/20 campaign. He’d cost half the price of Sancho too.

Ansu Fati

Ok, this seems unlikely considering United reportedly had a €100m bid for Fati rejected in January. If they can’t afford Sancho, they won’t be able to afford the 17-year-old Barcelona wonderkid.

Kingsley Coman

We told you last week that United could turn their attentions to the Bayern Munich winger if the Sancho deal falls through. He’s still only 24 and has got serious talent.
