The Champions League is so beloved because it features the world’s best players going head-to-head.

It’s brilliant. In this season’s final on Sunday, we get to see Neymar and Kylian Mbappe against Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller.

The competition has been Cristiano Ronaldo’s stage for more than a decade and Lionel Messi, a four-time winner, hasn’t performed too badly, either.

The problem, though, would come from picking just 11 greats to feature in an all-time Champions League XI.

There have been so many legends to feature in the competition that naming an all-time XI would be a really tough task.

But that’s what fans have done by voting in a BBC Sport poll.

It’s caused quite a stir on social media. Let’s take a position-by-position look at the XI.

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon

Buffon has never won the Champions League but he came out on top, featuring in 32% of teams.

Iker Casillas (29%) was second while Edwin van der Sar (14%) came third.

Defenders: Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, Paolo Maldini, Roberto Carlos

There was no room for Philipp Lahm, Marcelo, Carles Puyol or Gerard Pique in the XI.

AC Milan icon Maldini proved to be a popular pick. He was selected in 73% of teams.

Midfielders: Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Zinedine Zidane

Steven Gerrard missed out but it’s hard to have any complaints about the three chosen ahead of him.

Zidane, a Champions League winner as a player and manager, was picked in 63% of teams.

Forwards: Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo (90%) and Messi (88%) were certainties to make it. The only question was who would join them.

Former Arsenal striker Henry (26%) managed to get in just ahead of Robert Lewandowski.

Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer, Neymar and Mbappe will look to help their case of making the future XI when they meet in the final on Sunday.
