Wayne Rooney reveals Manchester United nearly signed Thiago in 2013

Thiago

Thiago Alcantara has been the centre of attention in Lisbon over the last couple of weeks.

The Champions League knock-out stages may have been motoring on, but for the Spaniard, it's been difficult for him to focus on football.

His side Bayern Munich have reached the final of the competition but for Thiago, he's constantly being linked with a switch away.

A move to Liverpool have been debated and rumoured for a few months now but any immediate signs of a transfer occurring look farfetched.

It had been thought that Thiago wasn't a priority for Jurgen Klopp but he is a genuine world-class player - they'd be fools not to pursue him.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the central midfielder in a deal that would come as a huge surprise if it was concluded.

However, things could have been very different for the ex-Barcelona man.

Thiago

Speaking to The Times (via MEN), Wayne Rooney recently made quite a large revelation. He said: "Thiago almost came to United in 2013 and now Liverpool are linked with him."

Fascinating words, especially considering David Moyes was in charge of the Red Devils at that time.

Rooney then opened up on Thiago's possible switch to Anfield, suggesting it would be terrible news from a United perspective.

The Premier League legend added

"He’s one of the best midfielders around – I just hope he doesn’t go there. He can take the ball, be composed on it, keep things ticking over – and he’ll put his foot in."

To contemplate our earlier thought, those words are exactly why Liverpool would be fools to ignore him.

He's currently valued at £43.2m, via Transfermarkt.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Thiago is a superb midfielder and could be the missing piece of the puzzle at Anfield.

They have a wonderful defence with the likes of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold while the attack speaks for itself.

Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino complement each other perfectly.

Though, if there was one area they could improve, it would be in the middle of the park.

Jordan Henderson had an outstanding season, one where he was named the FWA Player of the Year, but Thiago is a different beast.

Thiago

He rarely misplaces a pass, registering a success rate over 90%, while he's also effective going forward and in the defensive third.

The 29-year-old contributed to five goals in 2019/20 but also boasted a tackle rate of 2.3 successful challenges per match.

The stats point to a complete midfielder, so do his performances. Thiago has been influential in Bayern reaching the Champions League final.
