Newcastle United certainly mean business this summer.

After a summer if turmoil following the failed takeover attempt by Amanda Staveley and the PIF, supporters were fearful over what the future would hold.

Free transfers for Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick suggested that a frugal summer could be on the cards - something that would be concerning for supporters given the increased competition to avoid a relegation battle.

However with players such as Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson now linked, it seems that those concerns are being addressed.

It must be stressed that funds will still be tight at St James' Park, and that's why loan deals are also being prioritised.

One man who's said to be closing in on a move is Rob Holding.

The Arsenal man has fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta, leading to reports that he could be allowed to leave the club on a short-term basis.

With a move said to be close, former Spurs striker Darren Bent has been discussing the move and while he says that Arsenal would be sad to see him leave, the defender would be 'a superb signing' for Steve Bruce's side.

Asked if Holding would be a good signing for Newcastle, Ben told Football Insider: “It would be.

“I would be disappointed to see him leave Arsenal because he offers a lot.

“I think he’s a good defender, he puts his head in where it hurts, it would be sad to see him go.

“For Newcastle, it would be a superb signing. He’s somebody that would go up there and defend and I think he’d enjoy himself.

“Listen, it would be a very, very good signing for Newcastle.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

I'm with Darren Bent on this one - what a fantastic signing this would be.

Newcastle United desperately need new additions this summer and improving the defence is a key area to strengthen.

Described by Mikel Arteta as 'a really, really good player', Holding is someone has established himself as a solid Premier League centre back.

It's exactly that which Newcastle are looking for.

Holding would no doubt be costly, but if the clubs can agree a loan switch then it could be a deal that serves all parties perfectly.

After that then Newcastle may fancy their chances of funding a permanent deal in the hope that the defender has enjoyed his time on Tyneside.
