Man United transfer news: Victor Osimhen turned down move because of Odion Ighalo

Victor Osimhen turned down Man United

Napoli smashed their transfer record earlier this summer to sign Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian striker moved from Lille in a move worth at least £63 million, making him the most expensive African player of all time.

But the Serie A side are getting an incredible player.

Last season, the 21-year-old scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 38 games, proving he's got a very bright future ahead of him.

Napoli weren't the only club interested in signing Osimhen either, with Europe's elite circling around Lille's starlet.

Manchester United were one of those clubs attracted to the Nigerian and this week, Victor's brother Andrew has revealed that he actually turned down a move to Old Trafford.

And he did so for a very interesting reason.

Osimhen rejected Man United

"It is very true that Manchester United wanted Victor," Andrew told Complete Sports.

"But he told me something like he had too much respect for Odion Ighalo to be competing for shirts with his senior colleague.

"My brother holds Ighalo in high esteem and he just didn’t see himself going to Old Trafford to battle for a striking role with the highest goal-scorer at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt."

Ighalo was the reason he didn't join

Well, you've got to admire Osimhen's respect for his senior there.

But Man United fans really would have loved to see the striker arrive this summer.

So far, Ed Woodward has got just one signing over the line - Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek has signed for Man United

The midfielder is no doubt an exciting acquisition but with rivals Chelsea strengthening in almost every area, they risk falling behind the competition.

But Man United's loss is Napoli's gain. In Osimhen, the Italian club have gained a player that should help them challenge for Champions League football after a disappointing 2019/20 campaign.
