Man United: Mason Greenwood compared to Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo by top journalist

Greenwood has been tipped to go to the top

Mason Greenwood has been tipped to go right to the top after his incredible breakout season.

The 18-year-old Manchester United starlet cemented his spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side last term, playing 49 times and scoring 17 goals.

He also made his England debut earlier this month during a 1-0 win over Iceland in the UEFA Nations League.

Not bad at 18, is it?

But many people Greenwood won't stop until he reaches the top. In fact, top football journalist Neil Custis believes that in terms of quality and potential, he matches two of Man United's best ever.

"Man Utd starlet Mason Greenwood will be one of England’s greatest-ever strikers," Custis wrote for The Sun.

"Having covered Manchester United for 21 years, I have only seen Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo with the same ability and potential.

Greenwood is going right to the top

"Greenwood will get where Rooney got to, as well. Talk to people at United and they tell you of a humble, quiet lad, who works hard and has been a dream for the coaches at all levels to work with.

"A young Ronaldo grew into the world’s greatest player in the time I watched him at Old Trafford."

That's pretty massive praise and Man United fans will absolutely love hearing their young star being compared to two legends. But Custis also has a warning for Greenwood.

Greenwood has been compared to two legends

"As [Ronaldo] and Rooney both knew, with that great ability and status, they take on a higher level of responsibility as role models," he wrote.

"There is a stronger spotlight on footballers who play for United than any other club."

It is, of course, that kind of responsibility that has got Greenwood in trouble recently. We all know the story about what happened in Iceland. There's no need to drag it up again.

He'll no doubt have learned a very tough lesson from the incident and hopefully, will be strong enough to bounce back and continue on his path to greatness.

Because according to Custis, Man United have England's next great striker on their hands.
