Gaming giants Activision have announced that the latest edition of the Black Ops franchise will be available to play for free from Friday, September 18 to Sunday, September 20.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the sixth instalment in the Black Ops series and the 17th overall version of the first-person shooter.

The alpha version will be available to download today at 18:00 and will include three six-on-six modes in the form of Team Deathmatch, Domination and Kill Confirmed.

All players that partake in the Alpha weekend will unlock an exclusive calling card for use in Modern Warfare, Warzone and Black Ops Cold War.

The announcement came during a showcase event for the PS5, which also gave a new look at the campaign mode of Black Ops Cold War.

One of the more noticeable points of the announcement is that you aren't required to have preordered the game to play the Alpha version this weekend, as is often the case.

However, there haven't been any announcements of the Alpha version for Xbox One or PC, but it's expected that users of those consoles will be able to experience the game over a number of beta weekends in October.

The first of these beta weekends are open to PS4 users from Thursday, October 8 to Monday, October 12. Early access is on October 8 and 9 for those who have pre-ordered the game.

The second weekend, which runs from Thursday, October 15 to Monday, October 19, makes the game available to Xbox One and PC, while also supporting cross-console play. But it does require Xbox One and PC users to have pre-ordered the game if they wish to play during the beta weekend on the 15th and 16th, or have to wait until the 17th when it is open to all.
