West Ham handed boost in pursuit of Serie A colossus

West Ham United are facing a pivotal few days.

The Hammers appear to be in a difficult period as they look to keep themselves afloat in the Premier League.

Wholesale changes in the manager's seat and the playing squad appears to have taken a toll on the club's coffers as they face a tricky period.

David Moyes' side did manage to avoid relegation last season, but with it happening in the final week of the season it was far too close for comfort.

That's why supporters were hoping that the club could kick on in the transfer market this summer in order to pull away from the basement battle.

Unfortunately that hasn't happened.

Players including Carlos Sanchez, Pablo Zabaleta, Roberto, Albian Ajeti and Jordan Hugill were all offloaded at the end of the season.

Add into that the controversial call to sell the club's most talented youngster, Grady Diangana, and you start to see why fans aren't happy.

Tomas Soucek is the only player to join the club this summer, and that's why supporters are concerned about what could be in store for them this season.

With less than a week remaining in the international transfer window there's a real need to see new signings at the London Stadium.

According to reports from Football Insider, West Ham could be about to make a breakthrough.

It's claimed that an offer has been tabled for Nikola Maksimovic.

The Napoli defender is deemed to be surplus to requirements by the Italian side and so a deal could be done.

The report states that the Irons have offered in excess of £20million to sign the 28-year-old - a fee which could be close to being acceptable.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This is a deal that could be a huge relief to supporters of West Ham United.

David Moyes is absolutely desperate to bring in some fresh faces to the London Stadium this summer.

After all, they need to if they're to avoid a relegation scrap.

Signing a central defender will be absolutely key, and a move for Nikola Maksimovic could be just the tonic.

Valued at £16.2million by Transfermarkt, the Napoli defender could be an ideal addition.

While at the age of 29 he's a player who is heading into the final years of his career, there's no doubt that he could be a big signing.

Maksimovic has been capped 25 times by Serbia and that international experience could add real experience to West Ham's defence.
