If the early stages of the season have told us anything, it's that Manchester United have some serious work to do in the transfer market.
Until very late on in the summer window, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had made just one signing, with Donny van de Beek arriving from Ajax.
The midfielder was belatedly joined by Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani.
And whatever the scoreline might suggest, the Red Devils looked far from the finished article in the 4-1 win over Newcastle at St James' Park.
Solskjaer's men were uninspiring for large spells. In fact, that was only remedied when Van de Beek came on with a quarter of an hour remaining.
It's unsurprising that they are still in the market for midfield reinforcements, particularly as Paul Pogba continues his public flirtation with Real Madrid.
United are tracking Valverde
According to The Sun, the Frenchman's desire to leave could even play into United's hands as they continue to monitor Federico Valverde.
The 22-year-old has been impressive for the Spanish champions, chipping in with one goal this season.
A £640 million buyout clause means the Uruguayan, who already has 22 caps for his country, would normally be out of United's reach.
However, Ed Woodward is hopeful Pogba could be used as leverage as part of a swap deal.
The Frenchman recently told reporters while on international duty:
"Yes, all footballers would like to play for Real Madrid.
"Maybe it is a dream. It is a dream for me, why not one day? As I have said, I am at Manchester United and I like my club."
Could Valverde be the man to replace him?
The highly-rated youngster has had a lot of pressure on his shoulders at the Bernabeu.
There have been times when the Real academy graduate has struggled to live up to the hype, but the central midfielder has slowly been improving and now looks like he'd be an astute addition for United.
