PSG vs Man Utd: United go 1-0 up after VAR orders Bruno Fernandes to retake penalty

Manchester United enjoyed a huge slice of fortune in the first half of their Champions League opener against Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG started the brighter of the two teams and could have taken the lead early on if it were not for two stunning saves from David de Gea.

The Spanish goalkeeper denied Angel Di Maria a goal against his former club as he sprawled to his right to push away a long-range effort.

And he then produced a stunning save just minutes later to deny Layvin Kurzawa from point-blank range.

And United capatalised as they took the lead in dramatic circumstances shortly after.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were given a penalty inside 20 minutes when Anthony Martial was taken down inside the box.

Bruno Fernandes, who missed from 12 yards on the weekend against Newcastle, placed the ball on the spot.

But he saw his effort saved by Keylor Navas in the PSG goal.

Fortunately for him, the Portuguese was given another chance as VAR ruled Navas to have just stepped off his line.

And he would make no mistake at the second time of asking as he guided his spot-kick past Navas.

Watch his goal below:

United really are penalty FC.

Despite being at the club for just nine months, that was the 12th penalty that Fernandes has taken for United. He has scored 11 of them.

His nickname 'Penandes' gets more and more apt every day...

You've got to say that the referee made the right call, though.

Navas was clearly off his line and by the letter of the law, the penalty had to be retaken.

It's not very often we say this, but well done to VAR for spotting the infringement.
