Manchester United kicked off their 2020-21 Champions League campaign with an impressive 2-1 victory against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.
The Red Devils - who were without several big-name players including captain Harry Maguire, Mason Greenwood and new signing Edinson Cavani - won it late on thanks to Marcus Rashford's brilliant late goal.
The England international, who scored United's famous winner against the same side at the same stadium in February 2019, was once again the Red Devil's hero at the Parc des Princes.
Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock midway through the first half despite seeing his initial spot-kick saved by Keylor Navas. The penalty was ordered to be re-taken following a VAR review.
Navas was off his line and Fernandes was subsequently presented with another chance to put the visitors ahead from the spot.
The 26-year-old made no mistake with the re-take, confidently dispatching past Navas to put United 1-0 up.
Fernandes’s goal came against the run of play. PSG had a couple of chances to score early on through Angel Di Maria and Layvin Kurzawa but both players were thwarted by two fine saves from David de Gea.
And the Spanish ‘keeper was at his best again early in the second half, pulling off a stunning stop to deny Kylian Mbappe.
De Gea’s reputation as one of the world’s greatest goalkeepers has been in doubt following an unconvincing 18-24 months, but the Spaniard was back to his best in the French capital.
However, De Gea could do nothing to prevent Anthony Martial’s own goal just before the hour-mark.
The French striker inexplicably headed Neymar’s corner into his own net to gift PSG a priceless equaliser.
Much had been made of the threat posed by Neymar and Mbappe prior to kick-off.
But neither superstar were at their best at the Parc des Princes.
Instead, it was Rashford who produced the moment of magic to seal all there points for the English side.
United now prepare to take on Chelsea on Saturday evening before their second Champions League fixture at home to RB Leipzig next Wednesday.
