Newcastle snap up free agent

Newcastle United did not have the busiest of summer transfer windows.

They had been hoping for a takeover, of course, and the potential millions that could come with that.

Instead, they were again forced to rely on the limited generosity of Mike Ashley, but they did bring in two players for significant fees.

Striker Callum Wilson arrived from AFC Bournemouth for a fee of £20m, while Jamal Lewis was snaffled away from Norwich City for £14.8m, both per Transfermarkt.

Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser came in on free transfers, too, from Burnley and Bournemouth respectively, while Mark Gillespie made the move from Motherwell on another free.

They have endured a mixed start to the season following the closure of the summer window, beating West Ham United and Burnley, losing to Brighton and Hove Albion and Manchester United, and drawing with Tottenham Hotspur.

But it appears that their business isn’t quite done.

Shields Gazette journalist Liam Kennedy reports that the club have snapped up Florent Indalecio, a striker who can also play as a No.10, on a free transfer.

Indalecio has played for Saint Etienne in the past and was last seen in the Australian lower-leagues.

He has been on trial with the Magpies and scored a brilliant bicycle kick in training that was captured on camera by Allan Saint-Maximin, the club’s first-choice right winger.

The two are reportedly friends, and Indalecio will play for the Under-23s initially, as the club have already submitted their Premier League squad.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

This one is likely to fly under the radar.

But it’s a no-lose signing from the Magpies.

If he succeeds, this is an excellent free transfer, as he’ll end up playing a role in the first-team, or potentially helping the club receive a fee.

If he doesn’t, he hasn’t cost anything, so there’s no real chance of him flopping.

Not much is known about Indalecio but he will hope to grow and improve while he is at the Premier League club across the next couple of seasons.
