Aston Villa could be this season's surprise package.

After narrowly avoiding relegation last term it was expected that Dean Smith's side could struggle once again this term.

Based on their start to the season it seems like they could be in store for quite a campaign.

Four wins from six games so far have seen Villa settle themselves into the top half of the table - a position that I'm sure supporters would be thrilled with come the end of the season.

Such an improvement from last term means that the players deserve real credit.

As well as the new signings of players like Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez and Ross Barkley improving the level of quality in the squad, Villa have also shown real leadership.

For that Tyrone Mings deserves real credit.

The central defender has been a rock at the heart of Smith's defence, and according to The Athletic's Aston Villa reporter Gregg Evans, Mings' performances have been comparable with one of the Premier League's most successful defenders.

Speaking on The Villa View, Evans said: "It’s quite incredible, really.

"Honestly, I didn’t know that Tyrone was so vocal on the pitch because when the supporters are in the stadium, you can only hear shouts and screams, you can’t hear the step-by-step directions.

“He’s very much the on-field leader, the vocal leader, he’ll pull everybody together.

"It’s good to see because there aren’t too many like him, Virgil van Dijk is very similar, very vocal throughout the game and pulling the team in the direction that they need to go.

"It’s an old-school trait almost, isn’t it? It’s something that’s [been] lost a little bit.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Aston Villa could be in for an exciting season.

Last term they battled relegation but there was always hints that they had the makings of a good Premier League side.

This season they're living up to their potential.

Players such as Tyrone Mings and Jack Grealish will be vital in helping the club to establish themselves in the top half of the table.

Mings is a real old school defender who loves leading from the back, while also being fully capable of playing a bit too.

If Villa are to maintain their positive start then Mings will be key to that and so it'll be interesting to see if he can push them on.
