Manchester City and England star Ellen White turns 32 today. To celebrate her birthday, GiveMeSport Women selects the striker’s five best goals from her illustrious career.

During her 16-year stint as a senior footballer, White has played for Chelsea, Leeds Carnegie, Arsenal, Notts County, Birmingham City and Manchester City. In her 108 appearances in the Women’s Super League, White has scored 53 goals, even finishing as the league’s top scorer in 2018 while at Birmingham.

White has also brought her sublime goalscoring record to international football, hitting the back of the net 39 times for the Lionesses.

Here are five of her best goals for club and country:

White for Notts County against Arsenal, 2015

White opened the scoring for Notts County against her former team following a crafty set-piece.

Laura Basset looked set to take the free-kick, which had been given to Notts County on the edge of Arsenal’s penalty box. Instead, she appeared to run into Alex Greenwood, tricking the Arsenal defence into relaxing. As they did so, White spun and hit the ball into the corner of the goal.

The game finished 1-1 after Chioma Ubogagu equalised for Arsenal five minutes from time.

White for England against Japan, 2011

England finished top of Group B at the 2011 World Cup after defeating Japan 2-0, progressing to a quarter-final clash against France.

White was one of the goalscorers on the day, hitting an expertly-lobbed chip over Japan’s keeper Ayumi Kaihori from outside the box. Rachel Yankey then doubled England’s lead in the second-half.

Despite the impressive victory, England went on to lose their quarter-final against France. Japan overcame the United States in the final to lift the World Cup for the first time in their history.

White for Birmingham City against Chelsea, 2019

Chelsea suffered a rare defeat in January 2019, losing 3-2 to Birmingham City in dramatic fashion. White was the scorer of a last-minute winner for Birmingham, and she made sure it was done in style.

Charlie Wellings swung in a pinpoint cross to White, who had timed her run into the Chelsea box to perfection. White hit a cushioned first-time volley into the back of the net, sparking jubilant celebrations.

White for Manchester City against Arsenal, 2021

White showed why she is still considered one of the best goalscorers around during Manchester City’s clash against Arsenal in February.

In a game crucial to Manchester City’s title aspirations, White opened the scoring. She whipped a cross from Chloe Kelly into the near post, despite a difficult angle. The Citizens went on to win the game 2-1.

White for England against Austria, 2010

White made everyone aware of what was to come when she scored on her England debut against Austria in 2010.

The 20-year-old White came on in the second-half and scored the third goal in a 3-0 victory for the Lionesses. She collected a pass from Lianne Sanderson on the edge of the box, before delicately chipping the goalkeeper from a tight angle. It was her first England goal of many.
