The Irishman suffered a severe leg injury during his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier in July this year.
This rendered him unable to continue and The Diamond was adjudged the winner via doctor's stoppage.
McGregor broke his leg and it seemed like he would take a long time to recover. However, he has been recuperating quicker than expected and White has gone on to say that he could resume fighting by the end of this year.
As quoted by The Sun, the UFC chief said:
"Conor seems to be healing up pretty well. The question is: When can he start kicking again? If he could take kicks, then he'd be looking at a fight before the end of the year again, so it all depends on how fast that leg heals."
McGregor seems to be recovering pretty quickly and it would certainly be interesting to see if he can resume fighting as early as White says he could.
The Irishman previously said regarding his return to the Octagon: "2022. I’m improving rapidly! Working with the best team money can buy! I’ll be back in no time, lock loaded!"
Following McGregor's defeat to Poirier, White said that a fourth fight between the two would take place after the Irishman recovers from his injury.
Notorious has lost four of his last five fights and given how the last one unfolded, he certainly shouldn't rush into anything and make a return when he's 100% fit.
Fans will undoubtedly be more than eager to see McGregor back in the Octagon but the chances of that happening in the remaining two-and-a-half months of 2021 seem very slim.
However, when the Irishman returns, there is a good possibility of him having a fourth fight against Poirier.
