Journalist Ashley Preece reckons that 19-year-old Caleb Chukwuemeka could be the next youngster to make the step up into Aston Villa's first-team.

What's the latest news with Chukwuemeka?

Chukwuemeka is already a name familiar with Villa fans, with his brother Carney coming through the ranks in recent years before making his senior debut as a 17-year-old against Tottenham.

And Caleb joined his younger brother in Villa's academy when he signed from Northampton earlier this summer despite strong interest from both Spurs and Rangers, according to the Daily Mail.

The striker's first-team involvement has been few and far between so far, with his only appearance coming as a late substitute in the Carabao Cup victory over Barrow last month.

But he was an unused substitute against Chelsea in the next round and has since scored five goals in three Under-23s matches, including a hat-trick in a 4-2 victory over West Brom.

Chukwuemeka hasn't yet been on the bench in the Premier League, but Preece reckons the teenager is knocking on the door.

What did Preece say?

When asked if Villa have any other young players on the fringes of the first-team squad, he told GIVEMESPORT: "Caleb Chukwuemeka, Carney's brother, he was on the bench against Chelsea. He started really well; he scored a bagful of goals, scored a hat-trick against Albion Under-23s and came on against Barrow in the cup.

"He looks good, he's a new signing from Northampton and showed some Tottenham interest as well."

Is Chukwuemeka likely to get his chance under Smith?

Villa have spent big on strikers in recent years, forking out £28m on Ollie Watkins last summer and then £25m on Danny Ings in the last window, which means it's going to be tough for him to see much first-team football in the coming months.

But Smith has already shown in the Carabao Cup that he's prepared to give youth a chance, so all Chukwuemeka can do is keep scoring goals for the Under-23s and hope that his form won't be ignored.

The likes of Cameron Archer, Jacob Ramsey, Aaron Ramsey and his brother have all been involved in Premier League squads this season, though, so he can take inspiration from that, knowing that Smith will play you if you're good enough, regardless of age.
