Coco Gauff, Leylah Fernandez: Is the teen duo the next big doubles team?

Teenage tennis stars Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez have paired up as a new doubles team for the BNP Paribas Open.

The two are appearing at Indian Wells after both participated in the US Open last month.

Fernandez reached the final of the tournament but lost out to Emma Raducanu, who became the new British number one after her victory in New York.

Gauff, 17, and Fernandez, 19 started a big Twitter frenzy over what their doubles team name should be.

Fans posted witty suggestions including 'CoLah' and 'Fernandauff' in reply to the WTA's video of the two in action in California.

The teens thundered to an emphatic straight sets opening win – beating Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu, and Renata Voráčová of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-1.

There's been a lot of support for the new duo after their debut performance and some spectators are already tipping them to go on and win a Grand Slam together.

The two have already set themselves up for a bright future on the individual stage. Gauff is currently ranked 19th in the world after reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open and the fourth round of Wimbledon earlier this year.

Fernandez produced a stunning run at Flushing Meadows, pushing champion Raducanu to her limits with an exhilarating performance in the final.

The Canadian also represented her country at the Tokyo Olympics but was beaten by Barbora Krejčíková in the second round.

The pair's next match at the BNP Paribas Open will be against Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands and USA's Nicole Melichar-Martinez tomorrow in California.
