In recent years, Lewis Hamilton has emerged onto this list and shot right up to being among the greats.
So who is greatest Formula 1 driver to have ever lived? It's a debate that has raged for years but Sun journalist Ben Hunt has now had a go at settling that very debate.
The 10 best Formula 1 drivers
10. Fernando Alonso
9. Sir Stirling Moss
8. Alain Prost
7. Niki Lauda
6. Sir Jackie Stewart
5. Juan Manuel Fangio
4. Jim Clark
3. Micheal Schumacher
Schumacher was mostly renown for his fast laps at especially crucial times.
Schumacher's first Championship came in 1994 with Bennetton, three years after his debut season he spent with Jordan.
He won each championship from 2000-2004 racking up an overall championship amount of 7.
2. Ayrton Senna
A driver who stands in history especially for Toleman, Lotus, McLaren and Williams.
He won around a quarter of his races and found himself upon the podium fifty percent of the time.
His first championship title win came a year into his career and in 1988 he won his first world championship. His second and third were consecutive in 1990 and 1991.
Senna was mostly known for his speed over a single lap during qualifying and he held the record for the most pole positions for 17 years from 1989 not 2006.
1. Lewis Hamilton
In 2020 with Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton matched Schumacher’s championship record of 7.
However, his challenge to eclipse that record is currently being challenged massively by Red Bull driver Max Verstappen.
He is as consistent against those he competes against, he dominates in qualifying and manages to defy the odds on many occasions.
Over half of the races he’s competed amongst, he has found himself on the podium (176 of 282 times) winning 100 times.
It comes without surprise that Hamilton has found himself topping this list because of his many, many successes and he is continuing to break records whenever possible.
Will there be another driver as successful and rounded as Hamilton, how long will he be staying on the top spot?
