Cristiano Ronaldo has rescued Manchester United in the Champions League yet again.

United found themselves in serious trouble when Atalanta raced into a 2-0 lead at half-time with Mario Pašalić and Merih Demiral both scoring to heap further misery on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, there was a glimmer of hope for the Red Devils after the interval with a moment of magic from Bruno Fernandes slipping Marcus Rashford through on goal for a chance that he gobbled up.

United comeback from 2-0 down

And that prompted Solskjaer to make one final roll of the dice with Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Jadon Sancho entering the fray to try and secure another dramatic Champions League comeback.

But for all the attacking reinforcements piled on to the pitch, it was the unexpected source of Harry Maguire that provided the equaliser with the United captain volleying home with 15 minutes to play.

Then, you guessed it, Mr. Champions League had his say on matters with United chasing a late winner with almost identical scenes to the Villarreal game unfolding at the 'Theatre of Dreams'.

Truth be told, Ronaldo flipping the result on its head papers over a lot of the cracks at Old Trafford and there's no denying that the final score of 3-2 doesn't exactly mean that all is well at the club.

The fact of the matter is that United benefitted a great deal from the amount of space that Atalanta left wide open in defensive areas with Solskjaer's substitutes adding that killer touch of creativity.
