About Aston Villa
Aston Villa Football Club is a professional club based in Aston, Birmingham.
The club was formed in 1874 and has played at 42,785 capacity Villa Park since 1897.
Villa has a long and turbulent history having begun the century as one of the most successful in England before relegation to the second tier in the 1930’s.
They are also one of only five English clubs to have won the European Cup having beat Bayern Munich in the final in 1982.
Local rivals Birmingham City are only 2.4 miles away with games between the pair dubbed the ‘Second City Derby’.
Aston Villa enjoyed 24 years in the Premier League from its founding in 1992 until relegation in 2016.
The club was bought by Chinese businessman Tony Xai for £76 million in 2016 and spent big in the pursuit of a return to the Premier League.
After financial difficulties in the summer of 2018, ownership of the club shifted to billionaire duo Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, who held majority stakes by the time the club secured promotion in 2019.
